The DAR LA Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization founded in 2023 and is dedicated to the memory of a beloved family who had suffered an unthinkable tragedy.

The passing of Darlene Flores' six-year-old daughter, Iyla Erica Johnson, in August 2022 was a heartbreaking loss for the family. Iyla’s father took Iyla’s life before taking his own.

Darlene Flores and the children’s father had been in a relationship for 20 years. Darlene was a victim of Domestic Violence and struggled silently. Her family was either unaware or unsure of how to help. When Darlene finally decided to end the relationship, this was the outcome.

In the face of such a heart-wrenching event, Darlene was determined to create a foundation in honor of her daughter's name, the "Iyla Erica Foundation," to help other women and their children, just like her. She didn’t want anyone else to experience what she went through. She wanted her story to be told.

Unfortunately, in February 2023, Darlene, aged 38, and her two sons, Eric Johnson Jr., aged 19, and Rodrigo Johnson, aged 16, passed away.

Her son, Eric Jr. took Darlene’s life, Rodrigo’s life, and his own. Eric Jr. was hurting deeply due to the loss of his sister and wanted to be reunited with her as a family. We believe this situation is a chain reaction following the tragedy in August and stems from the Domestic Violence the adolescents witnessed even as children.

Their passing left a deep void in the hearts of everyone who knew them.

The name "DAR LA" was chosen as a tribute to Darlene Flores, whom some called "Darla.” As a proud Californian, she often told people she was from "LA."

The primary goal of the DAR LA Foundation is to honor the lives lost, raise awareness and educate about Domestic Violence.

We are committed to creating a safe and supportive space for survivors to share their stories and connect with others who have experienced similar situations.

Our primary goal is to provide scholarships for women survivors and their children and sponsor them to attend various camps that promote spiritual growth and well-being.

We hope to one day to be able to provide a safe place for woman and children. That is our future goal and a vision that Darlene had. (Darlene’s vision in picture below)

We understand the pain of loss and are committed to doing everything in our power to help those who have suffered find hope and healing.  We will turn this heartbroken tragedy into a beautiful purpose.
